Baseball Game Preview: Mountaineers battle Cowboys

By Ryan Decker OKLAHOMA CITY – Fresh off a mercy-rule victory Wednesday, the fourth-seeded West Virginia Mountaineers (33-22) are set to do battle with the No. 8 seed Oklahoma State Cowboys (27-25) Thursday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Both West Virginia and OK State won their opening-round matchups, meaning both  will survive until at least Friday.  Pitching told the tale in Tuesday’s edition of the Backyard Brawl. West Virginia (31-20) surrendered three hits while shutting out the Pittsburgh Panthers (22-28), earning a 2-0 victory in the final home game of the year to complete the two-game season sweep of its rival.

West Virginia head coach Randy Mazey knows he doesn’t have to motivate his team ahead of Tuesday’s game. It was difficult Sunday due to all the distractions, which still resulted in a 4-3 victory over Gardner-Webb to sweep the two-game weekend series.

The West Virginia University baseball team seniors were sent off with a two-game series sweep against Gardner-Webb. The first game of the series on Friday was cancelled due to inclement weather in the area, but were able to get a 15-5 victory on Saturday followed by a 4-3 victory on Sunday.

Two of the top teams in the Big 12 conference head to Morgantown, West Virginia as the Mountaineers host TCU in a three game series at Monongalia County Ballpark.     A day after one West Virginia basketball junior decided to officially return for his senior season, another is now leaving the program. Elijah Macon announced his intention to sign with an agent and play professional basketball rather than come back for what would be his final year with the Mountaineers.
