No. 1 WVU Advances to Sweet Sixteen

The No. 1-ranked and top-seeded WVU women’s soccer team is headed to the Sweet Sixteen. In front of nearly 2,500 fans, the Mountaineers came away with a 1-0 victory in double overtime over Ohio State to advance to the third round of the NCAA Tournament. WVU was firing early, but nothing would go in between the pipes leading to a scoreless match heading into double overtime. Ashley Lawrence had a nice shot that hit right off the cross bar, and Michaela Abam got the ball, settled it down, and lofted one right inside the net. In the 103rd minute, Abam tallied the game winner and her 11th goal of the season.

“Ashley’s, I wish that one would have went in first, but again, we were this close and it was coming to a point where we were taking this many shots and one had to go in. We push for each other, and we all persevered through the whole struggle of it all, and I’m glad we came out with a win,” Forward Michaela Abam said. “This feels so unreal.”

WVU outshot the Buckeyes 26-5 in the win. The Mountaineers also earned their 16th shutout of the season.

“As a team that is going on to the Sweet Sixteen and has won 2 conference championships, absolutely do and did all year long what everyone witnessed tonight, and that was way finding a way to win,” Head Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. “Incredibly proud, Keish (Kadesiahe Buchanan) has anchored that back line to 16 shutouts which is incredible. Our whole team defends, but without Keisha’s voice it would have been a whole lot different. Then, Michaela Abam, scoring that game winner. She has been doing that all year. I am thrilled and proud, and our staffed prepared them and here we are.”

WVU previously beat Ohio State 2-1 in the regular season.

No. 1 West Virginia will now host No. 14 UCLA in the third round on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
