WVU Women's Hoops Non-Conference Schedule Revealed

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (July 12, 2017) – West Virginia University Director of Athletics Shane Lyons has announced the 2017-18 women’s basketball non-conference schedule.

West Virginia will play 12 regular-season non-conference games, including renewed rivalries with Virginia Tech and Pitt, a three-game trip to the Virgin Islands and a visit to Charleston, West Virginia. Five opponents on this year’s schedule reached the postseason in 2016-17: Texas A&M, Drexel, Morehead State, Radford and Virginia Tech.

“Our schedule provides us with a nice challenge before we open action in the Big 12,” stated coach Mike Carey. “With matchups against Virginia Tech, Texas A&M and Pitt, our team will be prepared for the rigors of the Big 12. We are excited about the upcoming season.”

The Mountaineers officially open the season against Central Connecticut State on Friday, Nov. 10. WVU will then continue its three-game homestand with matchups against Sacramento State on Tuesday, Nov. 14, and North Florida on Sunday, Nov. 19.

From there, West Virginia will travel to St. Thomas on the U.S. Virgin Islands and participate in the Paradise Jam for the third time in program history. WVU plays Butler on Thursday, Nov. 23 and Drexel on Friday, Nov. 24, before renewing a rivalry with Virginia Tech on Saturday, Nov. 25.

After an eight-day hiatus, the Mountaineers return to action at Texas A&M in the Big 12/SEC Challenge on Sunday, Dec. 3, in College State, Texas.

WVU’s biggest home non-conference game of the season is set for Thursday, Dec. 7, when the Mountaineers and Pitt renew the Backyard Brawl rivalry for the first time since 2012 at the WVU Coliseum.

West Virginia plays host to Coppin State on Sunday, Dec. 10, before traveling south to play Radford at the Charleston Civic Center on Saturday, Dec. 16.

The non-conference schedule closes with a pair of matchups against Morgan State on Monday, Dec. 18 and Morehead State on Thursday, Dec. 21.

West Virginia’s exhibition game will be announced at a later date.

In 2016-17, the Mountaineers finished 24-11 overall, 8-10 in the Big 12 and went on to claim the program’s first Big 12 Conference Tournament title. Additionally, the Mountaineers made their 12th NCAA Tournament appearance and advanced to the NCAA Second Round for the 10th time.
