WVU Rusher Alston Says He's Cleared to Play

WVU running back Shawne Alston appears poised to show his coaches exactly what he's capable of this week in practice.

On Monday, the junior from Hampton, Va. posted this update on his Twitter account:

"Cleared to play this week!!!!!! #ayyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

It wasn't exactly the best use of 140 characters, but it was a clear message for a player who has been waiting patiently since the spring to get in a white practice jersey and fully participate with his teammates. Whether or not he becomes a part of the game plan is likely a different matter altogether.

But according to his head coach, the fact that he's back in practice is perhaps the best sign.

"He's practiced about three times since I've been here and I've made reference to the fact that when guys practice, we're going to pay attention to them," Dana Holgorsen said Monday. "When they don't practice, we're not."

WVU players are off Monday to "be students" as Holgorsen puts it, but will be back on the field Tuesday evening. At that point, Alston will have the opportunity to make his coaches pay attention to him.

Alston is coming off a season in which he rushed for 248 yards on 56 carries with no touchdowns. He was the most experienced of the returning rushers, but his role came into question as he was unable to prove himself while he recovered from a neck injury.

He doesn't quite fit the mold of running backs that Holgorsen typically utilizes in his offense, but anyone who saw the Mountaineers struggle in getting any sort of push up the middle the past two games knows Alston could go a long way in helping the run game.

Just because Alston says he's been cleared to play doesn't mean he's necessarily at 100 percent and ready to go at Maryland this Saturday, but it's certainly a step in the right direction.
