Junior Bry McCarthy recorded the first multi-goal game of her career in leading No. 23-ranked West Virginia past Seton Hall, 4-0, in BIG EAST Conference action Friday evening at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The win extended WVU's conference win streak to 12 matches.
The first half was played with a lot of back-and-forth action until McCarthy put the Mountaineers on the board in the 43rd minute. McCarthy made a run up the left side and drove a ball over the head of SHU goalkeeper Elizabeth Bond, landing the shot in the upper right corner for a 1-0 lead.
West Virginia (7-3-0, 3-0-0), winners of five straight, doubled its lead shortly after intermission on a second goal from McCarthy. The Ajax, Ontario, native bent in a corner kick at the near post in the 48th minute.
The Mountaineers attempted a season-high 29 shots and 13 corner kicks on the night, while the Pirates (6-2-2, 2-1-0) were credited with 11 shots and four corners.
WVU added goals in the 57th and 75th minutes from sophomore forwards Frances Silva and Emily Dillon.
Silva and senior forward Blake Miller each took a game-best four shots, while goalkeepers Sara Keane and Kristene Mumby combined for WVU's fifth shutout of the season.
Bond finished with a career-high 10 saves and teammate Amie Ruhe attempted a team-best four shots for Seton Hall.
WVU returns to action against Rutgers on Sunday, Sept. 25, at 1 p.m., a match that will be televised on CBS Sports Network. Calling the action for Sunday's national telecast is Eric Frede with Tammy Blackburn handling color commentary. The contest has been deemed a "Dollar Day" with all tickets, hot dogs, popcorn and Coca-Cola products available for purchase for just one dollar each.
