Women's soccer players Sara Keane and Bry McCarthy earned BIG EAST weekly awards for their performances last week as Keane was named the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week and McCarthy was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced today.
Keane, a redshirt freshman, logged 177 minutes in goal to lead WVU to a pair of shutout wins over Seton Hall and Rutgers. She made eight saves and faced 20 shots and seven corner kicks in the two matches. Keane came up big with three highlight-reel saves against the Scarlet Knights in picking up her fifth clean sheet of the season.
McCarthy, a junior, helped the Mountaineer defense to a pair of shutouts while extending WVU's conference win streak to 13 matches. The outside back also was dangerous into the attack in both matches, scoring two goals in a win over Seton Hall. The two goals marked the first multi-goal game of her career and the game-winner was only second of her career.
West Virginia boasts an overall record of 8-3-0 on the season, having won six straight matches. WVU has outscored its opponents 14-2 during the win streak.
The Mountaineers return to action with a pair of BIG EAST road matches at Georgetown and Villanova. WVU battles the Hoyas on Sept 30 before facing the Wildcats on Oct. 2.
