The West Virginia women's tennis team completed its first day of play at the Wake Forest Invitational in Wake Forest, N.C.
Four Mountaineers competed in a total of six matches during the course
of the day, including sophomore Mary Chupa.
Chupa scored a victory in Flight F Singles play against Elise Held of
Davidson, 6-2, 6-2.
With the victory, Chupa will now take on the No. 1 seed in the Flight F
Singles draw, Louisville's Stefanie Villajuan.
Fellow sophomore Melis Tanik fell to Karolina Chernaya of Campbell,
6-3, 6-3 in Flight A Singles action.
Tanik and Chupa later combined to play in the Flight A doubles draw
against UNC-Wilmington's Olga Blank and Kelly Cameron, but was
defeated by the tandem 8-5.
Freshman Ikttesh Chahal and senior Catie Wickline were the other
doubles pairing for WVU, as they competed in the Flight B draw.
The duo lost in a hard fought matchup against Brites Moniz-Soares and
Elise Held of Davidson, 9-8.
Play in the Wake Forest Invitational will resume tomorrow morning at 9
a.m.
