After the first day of competition at the Martha Thorn Invitational, the West Virginia women's tennis team displayed solid, all-around play, as each of its players in the tournament recorded at least one victory in singles or doubles action.
Junior Emily Mathis opened play with a first round victory in the Flight A Singles draw over Maria Lazaris of Cleveland State, 2-6, 6-4, 6-0.
Mathis then followed that victory with another win against Pitt's Gabrielle Catanzariti, 6-2, 6-4.
Sophomore Melis Tanik opened with a first round 7-5, 6-4 loss in Flight A Singles to Jocelyn Lu of Pitt, but bounced back with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win over Youngstown State's Carolyn Jesco.
Also playing in Flight A Singles was freshman Ikttesh Chahal.
Chahal won her first singles match of the day, as she knocked off Megan O' Sullivan of Duquesne, 6-3, 6-4, but then fell in her second match to No. 1 seed Isel Martinzez-Marcos of Virginia Tech, 6-7, 6-2, 6-3.
In Flight B Singles, senior Veronica Cardenas defeated Pittsburgh's Amanda Wickman, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 in her lone singles match of the day.
Sophomore Mary Chupa fell in her opening round match against Paul Gruber of Duquesne, 6-4, 6-4, but then came back with a victory over Duquesne's Judy Li, 6-4, 6-3.
Although senior Catie Wickline did not compete in singles play on Friday, she did team with Cardenas in Flight B Doubles, as the duo scored a 8-1 victory over a tandem from Duquesne.
Competition in the Martha Thorn Invitational will resume again Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
