MORGANTOWN -

The West Virginia University volleyball team defeated DePaul tonight at the WVU Coliseum 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-13) to win its second BIG EAST match of the season.

The Mountaineers (4-12, 2-3) tied their season-high record of service aces with 10 and had a season-high hitting percentage of .279 against the Blue Demons (4-14, 1-4).

"We are calling the offensive and defensive plays from the bench and our team stayed a lot more focused and engaged tonight," coach Jill Kramer says. "A lot of the time our emotions get the best of us and we just didn't let that happen tonight. We put ourselves in a good position to stay in control of the match."

After losing the first point in the first set, the Mountaineers quickly responded with two kills and a service ace from freshman middle blocker Evyn McCoy. DePaul called a timeout down 9-6 and senior libero Serinna Russo came out of the time out with two straight service aces to put WVU up 11-6. The Mountaineers continued to dominate the rest of the set by recording seven total service aces.

Using the momentum from set one, WVU began set two with an 8-2 lead that was started off with two straight service aces from senior outside hitter Kylie Armbruster. The Mountaineers used a balanced attack and a .353 hitting percentage to take the second set and a two set lead in the match.

The Mountaineers controlled DePaul in the third set as they never let the Blue Demons gain more than two points in a row on their way to winning the match.

Senior outside hitter Michelle Kopecky led the team with 12 kills and a .321 hitting percentage while Russo chipped in 22 digs and a season-high four service aces.

"All our pin hitters had a good match and our middles did their job," Kramer says. "We spread the offense out more and I don't think we were as predictable as we usually are and it helped a lot. We are looking forward to getting Notre Dame in here on Sunday and we are looking forward to having all our fans here."

The Mountaineers return to action, Sunday, Oct. 9, at the WVU Coliseum where it will take on BIG EAST foe Notre Dame at 1 p.m.
