Sophomore Melis Tanik has been named the West
Virginia University Student-Athlete of the Week for her performance
in last weekend's Martha Thorn Invitational that was held at WVU.
The Raleigh, N.C., native combined with fellow sophomore Mary Chupa to
win the Flight B Doubles draw, while also winning the Flight A Singles
consolation final. In total, Tanik collected three singles wins and
three doubles wins on the weekend.
With her singles
performance, she now leads the team with four singles wins and also
holds the high water mark with a combined seven doubles wins.
Special Notes of the Week
* Rifle: The No. 3-ranked
Mountaineers open their season in Lincoln, Neb., on Oct. 15-16. They
will face No. 9 Air Force on Saturday, and No. 12 Nebraska on Sunday.
* Swimming & Diving: The
WVU men's and women's swimming and diving teams will open the season
with the inaugural West Virginia State Games Oct. 14-15 in the WVU
Natatorium. Friday's events will begin at 6 p.m., while Saturday's
events start at 9 a.m.
* Volleyball: Saturday's 7 p.m.
match against rival Pitt is a designated "Dollar Day," with all
tickets, hot dogs, popcorn and Coca-Cola products available for one
dollar each.
