MORGANTOWN -
After
a two hour rain delay to start the game, first baseman Ryan McBroom stroked a
three-run home run to left field in the top of the first inning to lead the
Gold Team to a 9-3 victory over the Blue Team in the first game of the 22nd annual
Blue-Gold World Series at Hawley Field on Friday night.
McBroom's
home run followed a one out walk to right fielder Jake Ringold and a base hit
by third baseman Gabe Brown to give the Gold squad a quick 3-0 lead that they
never relinquished.
Right-handed
pitcher Corey Walter worked six innings for the Gold squad and allowed one run
on six hits. Walter also struck out five and walked three.
Right-hander
Ryan Tezak pitched effectively in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to earn
the save. Tezak scattered four singles and allowed two runs, both earned,
while striking out three to close out the win for his Gold outfit.
Danny
Dierdorff took the loss for the Blue team, going 4.2 innings and giving up four
runs on four hits. The right-hander also struck out three, while allowing five
walks.
Right-handed
pitcher Jared Hill relieved Dierdorff in the fifth and threw the final 4.2 for
the Blue, allowing five unearned runs on five hits.
The
Gold increased their lead to 4-0 in the third. Brown led off the frame
with a double over the center fielder's head and advanced around the bases on
consecutive two-strike groundouts from McBroom and L.K. Thompson.
The
Blue squad answered back in the bottom of the fifth on a lead-off single by
Chris Rasky followed by an RBI double into the gap by catcher Matt Malloy.
The
Gold offense tacked on an unearned run in the seventh, two in the eighth on a
two-run homer off the bat of shortstop Billy Fleming and two more in the ninth
when outfielder Bobby Boyd bunted for a base hit and the ball was thrown past
the first baseman allowing Brady Wilson and McBroom to cross the plate.
Infielder
Justin Fox contributed an RBI single in a two-run seventh inning for the Blue.
At
the plate, the Gold team was led by Brown, who finished the day two for three
with two walks in his first game back from a concussion he suffered on a
hit-by-pitch in an intrasquad game on September 25.
Tyler
Steele-Worsham, Jon Roszel and Rasky paced the Blue offensive attack with two
singles apiece in their losing effort.
The
series will resume Sunday, Oct. 16, with game two at Hawley Field scheduled for
3 p.m. Admission is free to the general public.
