MORGANTOWN -
The
West Virginia University rowing team ended competition at the Head of
the Kanawha on the Kanawha River in Charleston, W. Va., Saturday, with
two first-place finishes.
"UC
has a beautiful venue and I hope to see the Head of the Kanawha grow
into a showcase rowing event in years to come," says coach Jimmy King.
Senior
Shannon Gribbons and sophomore Courtney Schrand led the way for the
Mountaineers by finishing first and third in the women's singles
competition, respectively. Gribbons crossed the finish line in 22:29,
ahead of Eastern Michigan and Schrand, who finished the course in 23:15.
The
Mountaineers also took first in the women's open eight competition. The
crew of Kelly Kramer, Jenelle Spencer, Christina Mehrtens, Jessica
Hurlbert, Jessica Kelly, Karen Verwey, Hilary Meale, Rachelle Purych and
coxswain Sarah Cartwright crossed the finish line in 19:14, ahead
Eastern Michigan ‘A' (20:02) and ‘B' (21:40), and the University of
Charleston (21:46).
West
Virginia also had three crews slated to compete in the women's open
four competition. All afternoon races were cancelled, however, due to
high winds.
The
Mountaineers return to action on Saturday, October 29, when they travel
to Philadelphia, Pa., for the Head of the Schuylkill on the Schuylkill
River.
