The No. 18 West Virginia University men's soccer team battles No. 1
Connecticut presented by EZToUse.com on Tuesday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m., at
Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The
first 200 fans will receive a free WVU wristband courtesy of
EZToUse.com. The game also has been designated as a "Dollar Night" with
all tickets, hot dogs, popcorn and Coca-Colas available for just one
dollar each.
This
will be the fifth match against the Huskies under coach Marlon with WVU
holding a 3-1-1 record. WVU also faced a No. 1-ranked Connecticut team
in 2007, defeating the Huskies 1-0 in Morgantown.
The
Mountaineers enter the contest owning a 7-5-1 overall mark, including a
3-2-0 record in the BIG EAST. Last time out on Oct. 15, WVU fell to
Marquette 2-1 on a late goal from the Golden Eagles. Midfielder Uwem
Etuk recorded WVU's lone goal in the 46th minute, with
midfielder Shadow Sebele earning the assist. Sebele took a game-high
seven shots, including two on-goal. Keeper Justin Holmes finished with
two saves, while defender Raymon Gaddis made a team save.
Offensively,
WVU is led by Sebele and forward Andy Bevin, who have 16 and 14 points,
respectively, through 13 games. Sebele has tallied five goals and a
team-leading six assists, while Bevin has a team-high six goals and two
assists. Forward Peabo Doue, defender Eric Schoenle and Etuk each have
three assists.
In
between the posts, Holmes has started nine matches, playing 830 minutes
in goal. He has allowed eight goals, while making 22 saves for a 0.87
goals-against average. Holmes also has four shutouts.
Connecticut
is 13-0-1 overall and 4-0-1 in BIG EAST play, with the only blemish a
0-0 double-overtime tie with Notre Dame. In their last match, the
Huskies defeated Pitt, 1-0, on Oct. 15. As a team, the Huskies are
out-scoring their opponents 23-3 and out-shooting the opposition
215-136.
Offensively,
Mamadou Diouf leads the team with 16 points (8 g, 0 a). He has
registered 41 shots, 13 on-goal. Carlos Alvarez and Allando Matheson
have each recorded three scores. Tony Cascio leads the squad in assists
with six, while Alvarez and Stephane Diop each have four.
In
between the posts, Andre Blake has started all 14 contests. He has
allowed three goals and has made 55 stops, for a .948 save percentage
and goals-against average of 0.21. Ford owns 11 clean sheets this
season.
The
Huskies are under the guidance of Ray Reid, who is in his 15th season
with the program and owns a 213-70-35 mark. Reid is the NCAA's second
winningest active coach and has won four national championships, seven
BIG EAST regular-season titles and four BIG EAST Tournament titles.
