The WestVirginia men's and
women's swimming and diving teams fell to Penn State onSaturday
afternoon in the McCoy Natatorium. The men were defeated 143-98 andthe
women 137-96.
"Our goal was to compete from the start and winhalf the events, but we
fell short," says coach Vic Riggs. "Our freshmen didvery well and we had
some big swims. Overall it was a good meet."
For the men, freshman Daeton Davenport put pointson the board with a
first-place finish in the 500 free (4:40.15) and third inthe 1000 free
(9:39.25). Taylor Camp took first in the 200 free (1:40.82) andthe 200
fly (1:50.44), while Tim Squires added another first for the men in
the50 free (20.82).
The women had a strong finish in the 200 breasttaking first through
third. Breanna McCann took first (2:23.59), MelissaShreiber second
(2:25.46) and Jenelle Zee third (2:25.49). Rachael Burnett hadanother
great meet with a first-place finish in the 500 free (4:53.92),
secondplace in the 100 free (51.84) and third in the 400 IM (4:22.50).
Mandie Nugenttook second in the 500 free (5:00.04) and third in the 200
fly (2:02.78).
The Mountaineers closed out the swimming portionwith both the men and
women taking first in the 400 free relay. The women'steam of Tiera
Butkus, Rachel Gorrie, McCann and Eva Burlingham won with a timeof
3:35.56. Brad Eichenseer, Squires, Camp and Eric Johnson swam to first
in3:03.65.
The diving teams had another great meet withfreshman Haily VandePoel
winning both the 1-meter (260.70) and 3-meter (274.12)events. Richard
Pokorny took second for the men on the 1-meter (308.47) and3-meter
(306.52) boards.
"I am pleased with all of the divers after today,"says diving coach
Michael Grapner. "They keep getting better and it is only thebeginning
of the season. Haily continues to set the bar high and Richard hasadded
several new dives to his list. It will be an exciting year for us."
The women's team will be in action next against JamesMadison at the WVU
Natatorium on Oct. 29, at 11 a.m.
