MORGANTOWN -
After two brief weeks,
the West Virginia rifle team has reclaimed the nation's No. 1 ranking,
as the Mountaineers sit at the top of this week's College Rifle
Coaches Association (CRCA) Poll.
The Mountaineers (3-0, 2-0 GARC) earned the top billing for the
first time this season; the squad was last ranked No. 1 in March prior
to its second-place finish at the 2011 NCAA Championships.
The CRCA issues new rankings every week this season, and each
poll will be based on the team's most recent reported score.
"I'm really happy the team is shooting well and improving at
this point in the season," says coach Jon Hammond. "We're really
not too concerned with the rankings at the moment, and they will change
every week. We're off to a good start this season, and the team is
working hard every day to improve and better itself. That is what is
important."
WVU earned its ranking this week due to its season-best 4693
score, shot on Oct. 22 in a win over then-No. 6 Army.
Kentucky, the 2011 defending national champions and the
most-recent No. 1 ranked team, checks in at No. 2 this week (4669). TCU
dropped one spot to No. 3 (4663), while Ole Miss jumped four spots to
No. 4 (4650) and UTEP held steady at No. 5 (4642).
Nevada dropped two spots to No. 6 (4640), with the Black Knights
and Alaska-Fairbanks sliding back one spot each to No. 7 (4637) and No.
8 (4631), respectively. Murray State is ranked No. 9 (4628), and
Nebraska closes out the Top 10 at No. 10 (4626).
The Mountaineers continue their homestand this weekend with two
matches at the WVU Rifle Range. The squad welcomes No. 14 Memphis on
Saturday, Oct. 29, and the Racers on Sunday. Both matches are expected
to begin at 8 a.m.
