The WVU women's soccer team won its second-straight Big East Conference Championship Sunday behind the strong play of the tournament's most outstanding players.
Senior Blake Miller was named Most Outstanding Offensive Player while Bry McCarthy took the award for defense after a 2-0 final over Louisville at Dick Dlesk Stadium.
"I think that you work hard for the players, you work hard for this university, you work hard for this state and I think it just kind of overwhelms you when all your hard work is rewarded for the athlete and they get to experience a championship," head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said after the game.
Miller got the scoring started with a penalty kick in the 27th minute and an additional goal from Frances Silva just four minutes into the second half put away the Cardinals.
West Virginia got strong play from freshman goalkeeper Sara Keane, who finished the game with five saves in a shutout effort.
The Mountaineers have now won three league titles in the past five seasons.
"Sometimes you don't reflect enough of what this program has done," said Izzo-Brown. "I always say stats and awards and championships talk for themselves and I don't really need to talk [about] them. So if we're winning three in five years, it's pretty damn good."
The win was welcomed in Morgantown after the men's basketball team lost its exhibition on Friday and the football team fell to Louisville Saturday. The fourth-largest crowd in WVU women's soccer history celebrated with the Mountaineers after the win.
"When our young ladies put on our jersey and it has WVU on it, they always play for this university and this state," said Izzo-Brown. "If we brought a little happiness and a little pleasure this weekend, then that makes me so, so happy. You'll never be disappointed because of the hard work that these young women put on the field."
