MORGANTOWN -
The
West Virginia men's soccer team saw its season come to an end with a 4-0 loss
at No. 5 Maryland in the second round of the NCAA Championship at Ludwig Field
on Sunday evening.
The
Mountaineers finished the season with an 11-8-1, their second consecutive season
with 11 wins. Ten of West Virginia's matches were against Top 25 opponents at
the time of the match and WVU had a record of 5-5 against those teams.
The
Terrapins held both the shot (19-5) and corner kick (8-6) advantages. Maryland's
Casey Townsend recorded a game-high four shots, while Andy Bevin and Uwem Etuk
had two shots apiece for the Mountaineers.
WVU
controlled much of the beginning and end of the first half, but six Maryland
shots in a span of eight minutes in the middle of the half proved to be deadly.
Townsend
was able to convert on a rebound in the 20th minute to give Maryland
the 1-0 lead after Helge Leikvang sent a cross that went off the hands of WVU
keeper Pat Eavenson. Townsend gathered the rebound and rocketed the ball in the
open net.
The
Terrapins previous best chance came in the 12th minute on a Townsend
shot that was blocked after a free kick just outside the 18 yard box.
WVU
opened play by forcefully and Maryland conceded two early corner kicks that
almost led to a WVU goal in the fourth minute when Bevin sent a corner that
trickled through the goalmouth and across the field.
Maryland
held a 9-2 shot advantage at the half, while the corner kicks were equal at
5-5.
Etuk
recorded WVU's first shot on-goal in the 55th minute when he lined a
shot from the right side of the pitch into the arms of Maryland keeper Keith
Cardona.
Townsend
notched his second goal of the match in the 60th minute after Sunny
Jane sent a pass off his heel to Jereme Raley, who crossed to Townsend.
Jordan
Cyrus extended the lead to 3-0 only a minute later after Jane sent a pass
through the goalmouth to the foot of Cyrus. Cyrus was able to kick it into the
open net from two yards away.
Townsend
completed the hat trick in the 76th minute after receiving a long
pass from Kaoru Forbess past the WVU defenders. Townsend gathered the ball and
placed it perfectly over the head of Eavenson and into the back of the net.
Eavenson
recorded three saves in the losing effort, while Cardona made one save for the
shutout.
The
game was the last for seven seniors as forwards Nick Claudio and Franck Tayou,
defenders Ruben Garrido, Raymon Gaddis, Uzi Tayou and Matt Drake and goalkeeper
Yale Tiley played in their last career matches.
Maryland
will now advance to the third round on Sunday, Nov. 27, where it will host the
winner of Louisville/Bradley.
