MORGANTOWN -
The West Virginia University Varsity Club is mobilizing for
a good cause. The Varsity Club is hosting "Cans for a Cause" Wednesday in
Morgantown.
Members of the Varsity Club will be at Kegler's Clubhouse
from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. collecting non-perishable goods and monetary donations.
Supplying a donation will allow a person to enter for a drawing to win two
tickets to the Pitt at West Virginia men's basketball game on January 30.
Donators will also have the opportunity to meet former WVU
student-athletes.
"We are going to have more than 30 former student-athletes
throughout the day," says Varsity Club President Dale Wolfley. "We will have
Pat White showing up, Jeff Hostetler, Greg Jones and many more."
This idea was developed and put together in less than two
weeks. Wolfley sought the help of the media to take what could have been a
small effort and turn it into a big one. Because of that, expectations are high
for fans to do their part to help make this event a success.
"When we were here as student-athletes, we were taught to
give back to the community here," says Wolfley. "They care about this community
and I know West Virginians care about this community, so we are expecting a
great turnout."
Those who stop by and make either a non-perishable donation
or monetary donation between the hours of 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. will receive a free
photo with a Mystery Mountaineer Santa.
"We are going to have our first ever Mystery Mountaineer
Santa Clause," says Wolfley. "Dale Sparks All-Pro Photography will be taking
pictures. So, if you bring a donation you get a picture with our Mystery
Mountaineer Santa. We're holding that as a big secret and having a lot of fun
with it."
Wolfley said he expects to grow this idea into a bigger
event next year.
