MORGANTOWN -
The West Virginia University Varsity Club is still counting
up the final tally, but the first annual ‘Cans for a Cause' appears to be a
huge success.
"It's 4:30 and I think we are over $11,000 [in donations]
and I would say probably we have about 4,000 pounds of food," says Varsity Club
President Dale Wolfley. "So, it's really a special day."
The Varsity Club is comprised of former WVU student-athletes and
some of them chipped in to help make the ‘Cans for a Cause' event a positive
one.
"It's our first annual food drive and the turnout is
uplifting," says former WVU Quarterback Pat White. "It shows that people in the
community care about the rest of the community and seeing everybody succeed and
no child being hungry."
Fans received autographs from players like White. They were
also able to get a free picture with a Mystery Mountaineer Santa Clause.
Organizers and sponsors were pleased with the job Mountaineer nation did in
helping to make the holidays a little bit better for others.
"It's a big deal for Mon County," says Kegler's General
Manager Doug Moore. "All of the food goes directly back into Mon County, so for
us to give back to the community helps any way we can and makes us feel good.
We get everything out of it that we put into it."
"I've been definitely blessed and fortunate starting with
the parents and home they brought me up in," says White. "They always told me
to give back and when I have the opportunity, that's what I want to do."
White will likely be making more appearances in and around
Morgantown. He said he is enrolling in graduate school to study marketing and
communications.
Wolfley put this food drive together in roughly two weeks
and it turned out to be a huge success. Expect the second annual food drive to
be even bigger and better in 2012.
