Through the second week of voting, West Virginia is currently in the 10th spot of the Naismith Student Section of the Year Contest, well behind Purdue who leads the way with 6,028 votes. The Mountaineers tally 944 votes as of now, and that is exactly why WVU fans need to VOTE, VOTE, VOTE!!!
Remember, the key is to be in the top 16 for the first round of public votes (ends on February 12), so your student section qualifies for the final round of public votes beginning February 13, 2012.
We all know that West Virginia fans are among some of the nation's best and no matter where you come from, when you take your seat at any Mountaineer sporting event you feel an overwhelming sense of state pride and school support.
With that being said, it seems like the new contest by Naismith Awards for the Student Section of the Year would be right up WVU's alley.
As stated by Naismith, the contest is open to all Division I basketball schools and is dedicated to celebrating fans that love college hoops and provide support to their college basketball team with devotion and passion.
Fans can vote from January 9th through February 12th on the "I Love College Hoops" Facebook page.
For those of you without Facebook, you can vote by sending a postcard that includes your vote to :
Attention: Tim Hawks/Naismith Student Section of the Year Award
290 Interstate North Circle, Suite 200
Atlanta, GA 30339
The 16 schools with the most votes will move forward to the second round of voting, which will take place February 13th through February 24th. Fans may use the Facebook page or mailing address to vote during this round as well.
Finally, in the last round, the top eight schools will be sent to the Naismith Awards Board of Selectors for a final vote.
The winning school's student section will only win bragging rights, but the winning institution will win $5,000 for its athletic association.
So in the words of Nikki Goodenow, WVU's Trademark Licensing Coordinator, " Fans can vote everyday, so keep voting Mountaineers!"
