MORGANTOWN -
West Virginia University Athletic Director Oliver Luck continues to beat the Big 12 drum insisting that WVU will be playing in that conference next season despite the ongoing legal battles between West Virginia and the Big East.
WVU appears to be preparing for its Big 12 opponents by hooking onto some of their former assistants. First came word that Oklahoma State Special Teams Coordinator and Safeties Coach Joe DeForest resigned for a job at WVU on Wednesday. Now, the Tulsa World is reporting that Oklahoma Co-Defensive Coordinator Brent Venables may be heading to West Virginia as well.
Venables has reportedly been offered a job on Holgorsen's staff. Whether that is Defensive Coordinator or Co-Defensive Coordinator with DeForest is still unknown.
Oklahoma hired Mike Stoops to work under his brother Bob as the Co-Defensive Coordinator. Mike Stoops is going to get to call the defensive plays, which is believed to be part of the reason why Venables is listening to offers.
Venables has a reputation as a great recruiter. His primary recruiting targets were in Texas; however, he also is the guy Oklahoma tends to send into other areas to help seal the deal with recruits.
Venables runs a 4-3 defense that will occasionally morph into something different depending on certain game situations.
Obviously Holgorsen wants Venables and DeForest for their coaching and recruiting abilities. However, think of the added bonus those two men bring in having first-hand knowledge of personnel and schemes at both Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. Those are two schools that could stand in the way of West Virginia's pursuit of a Big 12 title in its first year in the league.
