Dana Holgorsen is luring another NFL assistant to Morgantown.
A member of the WVU football staff has confirmed the Mountaineers will hire Mike Smith to coach linebackers at WVU. Smith was recently promoted to outside linebackers coach for the New York Jets after beginning the season as an intern for the staff.
Smith played linebacker at Texas Tech while Holgorsen was an assistant for the Red Raiders and was offered a position on Mike Leach's staff in December, but declined to remain with the Jets.
Smith hails from Lubbock, Texas and was a seventh round pick for the Baltimore Ravens out of college in the 2005 NFL Draft. His playing career ended with a shoulder injury in the 2006 season in his first start at linebacker.
Former WVU linebackers coach and defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel left the Mountaineers this month for an opportunity in the same capacity at the University of Arizona.
No official release has come from the University regarding Smith's hire.
