Holgorsen Still Working to Finalize WVU Staff

MORGANTOWN -

West Virginia University Head Coach Dana Holgorsen has been a very busy man since his team hammered Clemson 70-33 in the Orange Bowl. In that time he has been trying to nail down his 2012 recruiting class. Holgorsen has also been busy trying to fill out his coaching staff with the departure of three defensive assistants.

Two of those three coaching vacancies have been filled. Former Oklahoma State Special Teams Coordinator and Safeties Coach Joe DeForest has joined Holgorsen's staff. Former New York Jets Linebackers Coach Mike Smith has also joined his staff; however, both of their assignments have not yet been disclosed.

"We've got Joe DeForest in here," Holgorsen stated. "He was out on the road recruiting all last week. We got Mike Smith from the Jets and got that finalized."

Simple math reveals that there is one key person left to hire. At this point, nobody has been designated as the Defensive Coordinator to replace Jeff Casteel who recently left for the University of Arizona.

"We got a couple more to interview, but we'll fill that out," Holgorsen said. "I know people want answers, but we'll give them to them when we know ourselves."

Holgorsen would not confirm if current Outside Receivers Coach Daron Roberts is moving to the defensive side of the ball to handle defensive backs. Roberts was formerly a defensive backs coach with the Detroit Lions.

"It all depends on how we fit these pieces together," Holgorsen said when asked about Roberts position on the staff.

It appears Holgorsen is interested in another NFL assistant coach. That would explain the delay in announcing a new hire because when we spoke to Holgorsen, there were still four NFL teams alive in the chase for a Super Bowl title.

"We got a couple more to interview, but we'll fill that out," Holgorsen said last Saturday.

Signing day is fast approaching. There are eight days to go until high school seniors put pen to paper and make their college choices final. It is expected Holgorsen will finalize his staff prior to that date so there are no coaching questions remaining for potential recruits.

"We're going to put the pieces in place," Holgorsen said. "Number one is to get good people and get guys who understand how I am and understand what is required and make sure they fit in with the rest of the guys. That is the most important thing. We will make sure we get guys assigned to specific things based on who we get."

For now, there is no Defensive Coordinator on staff, at least not one assigned. Perhaps it will be Joe DeForest. Perhaps it will be a defensive staff with two Co-Defensive Coordinators. Perhaps it will be the next name added to the staff.
