Gray Uniforms Surface for WVU Football

MORGANTOWN -

When asked earlier this year if Dana Holgorsen had any plans to change West Virginia's football uniforms, the Mountaineers head coach said he had been looking into a potential gray design.

On Tuesday, photos began floating around the Internet of what appears to be an authentic gray top and bottom, as well as a gray helmet design.

A WVU team source did confirm that both the uniform and the helmet would be introduced for the 2012 season, but that an official unveiling was supposed to take place prior to then rather than a leak to the online community.

But of course, that's the way things work these days, isn't it?

The uniform (pictured to the right) is the same design as what the Mountaineers currently sport with gray as the main color and navy blue and gold detailing.

At an Orange Bowl practice, assistant equipment manager Aaron Malik said that WVU's current design would be featured for at least one more season before the Mountaineers were then given the option to opt for a different look. Another part of that equation is whether or not Holgorsen wants to continue the longstanding relationship with Nike, which he is expected to do.

The helmet image that has surfaced also has a gray base with a blue flying WV logo outlined in gold and a thin gold stripe surrounded by thicker blue stripes down the center. It looks similar to the helmet worn with the Nike Pro Combat uniforms in the 2010 season, only with a solid gray rather than the coal design.

Before a recent design change, the WVU men's basketball team also wore gray uniforms in addition to white, blue and gold variations. Now it appears that the football team will have the same options with four separate sets of pants and jerseys and two different helmets.

Earlier this year, equipment manager Dan Nehlen said, while standing in the shadow of recently installed space savers, that he wasn't sure where he'd be able to find room for more uniforms or helmets.

It appears now he will have to find an answer to that question.
