MORGANTOWN -
The WVU football team proved that it not only got the job
done on the field this past season, but also in the classroom.
On Thursday, the Big East Conference released its list of Football
Academic All-Stars and of the 182 total student-athletes nominated, West
Virginia had 27 on the list.
Only Syracuse had more representation on the team than the
Mountaineers with 28 players receiving the honor.
In order to be nominated, student-athletes must maintain a
cumulative grade-point index of at least 3.0 and complete a minimum of two
semesters of academic work.
Of the Mountaineers on the list, eight are seniors, five are
juniors and another 14 are sophomores.
The honor of Big East Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year
went to Cincinnati linebacker J.K. Schaffer, who will receive a $2,000
scholarship for his 3.7 GPA as well as his on-field accomplishments.
West Virginia's last Scholar-Athlete of the Year was linebacker
Reed Williams, who accomplished that feat in 2009. Before Williams, WVU offensive
lineman Garin Justice (2005) and linebacker Jay Henry (2006) also won the
award.
The 182 players nominated for the All-Star team are the most
in Big East history.
