Following its upset win over then-No. 13 Auburn, the West Virginia University gymnastics
team moved up two spots to No. 22 in this week's GymInfo Poll.
Today's ranking is based on the Mountaineers' (7-3, 3-0
EAGL) team average, which jumped to 194.5 after the squad tallied
195.175 in its wins over the Tigers (193.65) and Ball State (191.775)
yesterday, at the WVU Coliseum. No. 11 Ohio State won the meet with a
195.45 score.
The Mountaineers have scored 195.0-plus in three of their four
home meets this season and have not been ranked outside of the Top 25
since the year's first rankings were released on Jan. 16.
Tight scores on floor dropped the team's average to 48.808,
resulting in a rankings fall from No. 11 to No. 20. WVU remained at No.
20 (48.883) on vault and moved up one spot to No. 22 (48.517) on beam.
Individually, sophomore Hope Sloanhoffer ranks No. 28 (39.117)
in the all-around, while freshman Lia Salzano checks in at No. 20
(9.825) on beam; the Centerville, Va., native made her collegiate beam
debut yesterday.
Regionally, the Mountaineers hold on to the No. 4 spot in the
Southeast. WVU also ranks No. 4 on vault, beam and floor, and No. 6
(48.292) on bars.
Sloanhoffer owns five regional rankings, including a No. 7
all-around ranking and a No. 10 (9.833) vault ranking. The Cornwall,
N.Y., native also ranks No. 15 (9.783) on beam, No. 17 (9.779) on floor
and No. 19 (9.721) on bars.
Five total Mountaineers own beam rankings. Salzano is ranked No.
6, while junior Kaylyn Millick ranks No. 14 (9.788). Behind Sloanhoffer
at No. 15, sophomore Amanda Carpenter and freshman Beth Deal are tied at
No. 18 (9.717).
Junior Alaska Richardson continues to rank in the region's Top
10 on floor, as the Dayton, Ohio, native checks in at a team-best No. 9
(9.808). Millick, the lineup's opener, is ranked No. 20 (9.756).
Following her vault win with a career-best 9.9 score, senior
Tina Maloney moves up three spots to No. 20 (9.758). Junior Chelsea
Goldschrafe ranks No. 21 (9.756).
Maloney and Goldschrafe are ranked No. 12 (38.617) and No. 18
(38.375), respectively, in the all-around, while Millick is ranked No. 9
(39.0) following her season all-around debut. Millick also ranks No. 21
(9.713) on bars, and senior Nicole Roach ranks No. 23 (9.708).
The Mountaineers rank No. 2 in the East Atlantic Gymnastics
League (EAGL) behind NC State; the Wolfpack rank No. 19 nationally. WVU
also ranks No. 2 on vault, beam and floor, and No. 5 on bars.
Sloanhoffer is the league's top all-around gymnast for the
fifth straight week; the two-time EAGL Gymnast of the Week has held the
No. 1 ranking throughout the season. She also ranks No. 4 on beam, No. 7
on vault, No. 8 on floor and No. 10 on bars.
Salzano and Millick precede Sloanhoffer in the beam rankings at
No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Deal and Carpenter are tied at No. 7.
Millick and Maloney rank No. 3 and No. 9, respectively, in the
all-around; Maloney also ranks No. 10 on vault. Richardson ranks No. 4
on floor.
The Mountaineers open their three-meet road trip this Saturday,
Feb. 18, against EAGL foes Maryland and Rutgers, and William & Mary, at
the Comcast Center, in College Park, Md., at 7 p.m. WVU is 2-0 against
the field this year, having defeated the Terrapins, 195.1-194.225, on
Jan. 6, and the Scarlet Knights, 193.425-191.65, on Jan. 15.
