WVU Football Team to Hold Walk-On Tryouts

Posted:
MORGANTOWN -

West Virginia University Head Coach Dana Holgorsen began talking about "numbers" since he arrived at WVU. The numbers he is referring to are not points or yards, but rather the amount of players on the roster.

Holgorsen complained about inheriting a low number on the football roster from both a lack of full recruiting classes and a lack of walk-ons. He also vowed to do something about it.

Holgorsen signed 28 players in the 2012 class. Five of those 28 players will count against the 2011 signing class because they enrolled early. That also means those five players will be allowed to participate in spring practice.

WVU held a small walk-on tryout last fall to help bring in enough players to run better practices. Walk-ons fill out scout teams and help prepare the scholarship players for games. Every now and then a walk-on will work his way onto a special teams unit or even higher. See Owen Schmitt for an example of what some hard work as a walk-on can do.

Holgorsen told the media last fall that he intends to hold an even bigger walk-on tryout in the spring. He is proving to be a man of his word.

WVU will hold walk-on tryouts February 27. Registration will begin at the Caperton Indoor Practice Facility at 5:30 p.m. The workouts will begin at 6 p.m. and last about an hour. There are a number of steps West Virginia University students must follow to participate.

See this link if you are currently a West Virginia University student interested in trying to make the team.

WVU will begin spring practice on March 11. The Gold-Blue game will be played on April 21.
