Oliver Luck Writes Letter to WVU Fans

Mountaineer Fan:

Last fall West Virginia University made the significant announcement to move its intercollegiate athletic program to the Big 12 Conference.

The success of WVU's athletic teams during the past 20 years was instrumental in providing the foundation for the invitation to join ranks with many of the top academic and athletic institutions in America.

And your strong support as a season ticket holder and contributor to the Mountaineer Athletic Club provided the resources for the success stories in football, men's basketball, women's basketball, soccer, rifle and our 12 other varsity sports. WVU has established itself as one of the best athletic programs in the nation.

As we look ahead, like our student-athletes in competition, we all are facing strong challenges as we compete with Texas, Oklahoma, Baylor, Kansas, TCU, Texas Tech, Kansas State, Iowa State and Oklahoma State.

Seven Big 12 football teams played in bowl games this past season; six men's basketball teams received a berth in the NCAA Tournament; and seven women's basketball teams are in the NCAA Tournament. Football is critical to the financial support of our entire athletic program and football ticket sales are our most important revenue stream. West Virginia ranks seventh of 10 Big 12 schools in football revenue. This, coupled with one of the smallest football stadiums in the conference, spells the realistic challenges facing the University.

During the next few years, WVU will be addressing four areas that will be the catalyst for our ability to compete successfully in the Big 12 Conference:

- Upgrade our major athletic venues, Milan Puskar Stadium and the WVU Coliseum, to better accommodate our fans and improve our practice and training facilities

- Continue and build on our outstanding academic success by increasing the resources available to our student-athletes

- Meet the rising costs of tuition and housing for our scholarship student-athletes which has already exceeded $7 million

- Adapt to the increased travel commitment that many of our teams will be facing

We will be making a modest increase in the MAC per seat gift requirements and season ticket prices to remain competitive among the nation's elite athletic programs. Based upon ticket market data, the Mountaineer season ticket remains one of the best values in college football.

In the near future, you will receive information regarding our new Priority Points Program. Our staff has conducted extensive research to develop a plan that rewards longtime season ticket holders and contributors for their support of the athletic program and the University. I think you will find it to be a fair and equitable program to assist in the allocation of tickets and benefits to bowl games, basketball tournaments, away games and seating locations.

We have invested heavily in improving our technology as a service to our fans. In addition to the convenience of being able to purchase your season tickets online, we have added the ability to make your MAC contribution online at the same time. Now with the ability to scan tickets at the game, you can electronically transfer your tickets to another fan and print the transferred ticket at home.

Thank you for your loyal support and contribution to the success of our teams wearing gold and blue uniforms with "West Virginia" emblazoned on their chests. We are proud of our athletic history, and together, we look forward to the challenges of the Big 12 Conference.

Big things are coming.

Let's Go Mountaineers.
