Mountaineers Conclude Season Ranked No. 21

Following the 2012 NCAA
Regional Championships, the West Virginia University gymnastics team is
ranked No. 21 in the latest GymInfo Poll.

The Mountaineers (21-5, 12-1 EAGL) earned the ranking based on
their 391.165 national qualifying score (NQS). The NQS is composed of
the team's regional meet score of 195.9 and its final regional
qualifying score (RQS) of 195.265.

Each team's ranking in this week's poll is its final ranking
of the season except for the squads ranked in the Top 12 and competing
at the NCAA National Championships. A final poll will be released on
April 23.

WVU's last season-ending ranking came in 2009, when the
Mountaineers were ranked No. 25.

"We took a huge step in the right direction this year," says
first-year coach Jason Butts. "We ended last season ranked No. 36 in
the country. To move up 15 spots is a great accomplishment for this
team. It's a step in the right direction to get us back to the
national championships."

The Mountaineers were ranked No. 27 in the March 26 poll. After
entering the poll in the season's first week at No. 21, the team
continued to rank nationally until dropping out of the poll on March 5.
WVU was ranked as high as No. 20 on Jan. 30.

WVU, the 2012 East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) champions,
is the second league team ranked in the Top 25, as NC State checks in at
No. 17. Taking a look at the team's future conference opponents, Iowa
State is ranked No. 35, while Oklahoma, the 2012 Big 12 champions, is
currently ranked No. 3 and will compete at next week's national

Led by seniors Tina Maloney and Nicole Roach, the Mountaineers
finished fifth at the NCAA Auburn Regional Championships on April 7. The
squad's 195.9 score, its second-highest point total of the season, was
its best regional mark in program history.

The Mountaineers won their league-best seventh EAGL title on
March 24 with a season-best score of 196.475, the 10th-best score in
program history. With 21 victories, the Mountaineers earned their first
20-win season since 2008. Additionally, the squad finished the year 5-4
against ranked opponents.

Team awards will be announced at the squad's banquet on April
