MORGANTOWN -
Stanford athletic director Bob Bowlsby will be named the new
commissioner of the Big 12.
Following a long search while Chuck Neinas served in an
interim capacity, Bowlsby will be introduced during a Friday morning press
conference at 10 a.m. CT.
West Virginia athletic director Oliver Luck said he was
aware of Bowlsby's hiring while taking part in Thursday's Coaches' Caravan in
Parkersburg, W.Va.
"Bob is an excellent choice for Big 12 commissioner," Luck
said. "This only makes the Big 12 even more stable moving forward."
Bowlsby, who was athletic director at the University of Iowa
before his stint with the Cardinal, will begin serving as conference
commissioner on June 15 as he takes over for Neinas.
"The institutions of the Big 12
wanted a Commissioner that could take us to the next era as a conference with
the addition of TCU and WVU, and we unanimously agreed Bob is that
leader," Big 12 Board of Directors Chairman Burns Hargis said in a
statement released Thursday evening. "The search committee looked for a
candidate that has a vision for the next generation of college athletics, and
his credentials and ideas exceeded this. He understands enhancing athletic
competition among conference schools, the challenge of balancing academics and
athletics for our student-athletes, and working with our broadcast and bowl
partners."
Bowlsby will be the fourth commissioner
to serve the Big 12 on a full time basis.
