Posted: Updated:

With the championship portion of the season under way, the West Virginia track and field team got off to a strong start to the 2012 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships Friday evening in Tampa, Fla.

Distance runners Kate Harrison and Ahna Lewis performed well in the 10,000-meter run as Harrison scored two points for the team with a seventh-place finish in 35:43.54. Lewis posted a solid 36:15.51 in the event to finish in ninth place.

Steeplechasers Jordan Hamric and Aubrey Moskal posted strong finishes in the 3,000-meter event with Hamric placing ninth in 10:39.64 and Moskal crossing the line in 11th place with a time of 10:44.24. Hamric finished close to her season- and career-best time of 10:28.71, which ranks third on the WVU all-time best times list for the event, while Moskal arrived just six seconds past her career best of 10:38.62 set two weeks ago at the Larry Ellis Invitational.

In the hammer throw, junior Heather Adams achieved a 51.61-meter throw to finish fifth in her flight and 12th overall. Senior Terina Miller came close behind with a throw of 51.37 meters to finish sixth in the flight and 13th in the field. Miller owns the all-time WVU best hammer throw distance of 55.25 meters achieved at the Raleigh Relays earlier in the year, while Adams owns the second-best WVU distance of 53.29 meters earned at the Wake Forest Open.

The BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships continue Saturday for the Mountaineers with the javelin throw set for 2:30 p.m. and the 5,000-meter run scheduled to end the day's events at approximately 8:10 p.m.
