Owen Schmitt has four years of NFL experience and hopes to add to that total. The former West Virginia University fullback is currently an unrestricted free agent.
He spent the first two years of his NFL career with the Seattle Seahawks and the last two years as a starter with the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles chose not to offer Schmitt another contract.
Schmitt has apparently earned a tryout in Oakland this week. Schmitt's friend and current Eagles Wide Receiver Chad Hall tweeted, "Good luck to my boy and a great friend Owen Schmitt with his tryout in Oakland w the Raiders this week. Win a job brotha!"
Schmitt attended a recent Coaches Caravan stop in Parkersburg and told WVi, ""I have faith that I will get another shot," Schmitt stated. "It's just what do I do with that opportunity."
Every time Schmitt gets an opportunity he gives it his all and it usually works out. When he was looking to transfer early in his college football career to a division one school, he got a walk-on offer at WVU and turned that into a scholarship and starting role.
Schmitt was eventually a fifth-round pick in the 2008 NFL draft by the Seahawks. When he was given an opportunity in Philadelphia, he turned that into a starting job.
Now he is working for another opportunity, this time in Oakland.
