Previewing 2012 WVU Football Opponents: Marshall

West Virginia University will play a much different football schedule in 2012 than it did in 2011. WVi will take a look at all 12 opponents this fall and help get you ready for what those teams will bring to the table.

The 2012 season kicks off with the final game in the Friends of Coal Bowl series. WVU has won all 11 meetings against Marshall. The 2012 game between the two schools will be the last for the foreseeable future.

The 2011 game took nearly seven hours to play and was never completed due to numerous lightning delays. It was called early in the fourth quarter with WVU leading 34-13.

2011 Record – (7-6, 5-3 Conference USA)

Returning Starters – 7 on offense, 5 on defense

Head Coach: Doc Holliday (12-13 as Head Coach)

Leading Passer in 2011: Rakeem Cato (872 Yds, 5 TD)

Leading Receiver in 2011: Aaron Dobson (668 Yds, 12 TD)

Leading Rusher in 2011: Tron Martinez (649 Yds, 3 TD)

Last Meeting vs. WVU: WVU 34, Marshall 13 in 2011

Record vs. WVU: WVU Leads Series 11-0

Doc Holliday enters his third season as Head Coach of the Thundering Herd. He led Marshall to a win in the St. Petersburg Bowl last season, which allowed Marshall to finish the year with a 7-6 record.

Marshall should improve on that record with some key talent returning in 2012. Quarterback Rakeem Cato has a full year of experience under his belt. He needs to improve his touchdown to interception ratio.

Cato has his top target back this fall. Aaron Dobson returns after a solid 2011 season in which he racked up 668 yards receiving and 12 touchdowns.

Defensively, Marshall must find a way to compensate for losing its best player in Vinny Curry. Curry totaled 77 tackles, including 22 tackles for a loss and 11 sacks last season. He was a second round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles last month.
