When the Olympic Games get underway on July 27, West Virginia fans can expect to see some familiar faces among competitors.
According to College Sports Information Directors of America, West Virginia University leads all schools with five Capital One Academic All-America selections participating in the 2012 London Olympics.
Former Academic All-America honoree Dave Johnson is the head coach of the USA rifle team. He earned second team Academic All-America notice in 1984 and 1986. Johnson's got a B.S. in finance from WVU, and is a member of the Army Marksmanship Unit. London is his fourth Olympic Games and his third as Head Rifle Team Coach.
Another WVU alum, Eric Uptagrafft (1992, 1993) is a member of the American roster. A 1996 Olympian and 2008 Olympic hopeful, Eric graduated from West Virginia University, Suma Cum Laud, with a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering. He has been a member of the National Team for over 20 years.
Former Mountaineer Nicco Campriani (2011) had a spectacular summer with the Italian National team, winning the air rifle gold at the 50th International Shooting Sport Federation Championship helping distinguish him as the first qualified athlete for the London 2012 Olympic Games among all sports.
WVU rising senior Petra Zublasing (2012) is competing for the Olympic rifle team from Italy. This talented shooter finished second overall in air rifle at the 2011 NCAA National Championships.
Aside from rifle, West Virginia will also be represented by Mountaineer track and field standout Sarah-Anne Brault. Brault was a second team Academic All-America track and field performer in 2011 and will compete for Canada in the triathlon.
Capital One Academic All-America Teams are selected in 12 sports annually and selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
