MORGANTOWN -

As expected, the NCAA has approved West Virginia basketball guard Matt Humphrey's transfer waiver request.

On Thursday, WVU announced that the Boston College transfer will be eligible to compete with the Mountaineers this season after joining the team in June.

Humphrey began his collegiate career at Oregon, where he averaged 4.4 points and 1.5 rebounds per game as a freshman and 5.4 and 2.5 as a sophomore.

He then sat out a season after transferring to Boston College only to return to the court in 2011-12 for his junior season, in which he averaged 10.3 points while leading the Eagles in minutes played and steals. He also made 55 3-pointers and was third on the team with 50 assists.

Humphrey is pursuing a master's degree at WVU, having completed an undergraduate degree with a bachelor of arts in human development at Boston College this past school year.

He will have just one year to play for Bob Huggins and the Mountaineers.
