Jessica Fuston (Texas Tech), Jess Crowder (West Virginia) and Madison Mercado (Oklahoma State) have earned Big 12 Soccer Player of the Week accolades for games played from Aug. 24-26. This marks the fourth award for Fuston over her career and is the first weekly honor for both Crowder and Mercado.
Offensive Player of the Week
Jessica Fuston, Texas Tech, F, Jr., Cedar Park, Texas
Fuston
scored three goals, two in the span of just 2:50, against Montana to
match a career-high and propel the Red Raiders to a 4-0 win in their
finale at the TCU Invitational this weekend. Her hat trick brought her
season total to four goals after just four matches this season as she
has helped Texas Tech to its best start (4-0-0) since 2010. Fuston leads
the Big 12 in goals (4) points (8).
Defensive Player of the Week
Jess Crowder, West Virginia, D, So., Cary, N.C.
Crowder
made her first career start at defender, after starting the previous
two games at midfield, where she helped the WVU defense record its first
shutout of the season against defending national champion Stanford. The
Cardinal was held without a goal, snapping a 25-game streak of scoring
at least one goal. Crowder helped the Mountaineer defense allow only one
shot on-goal and one corner kick on the day.
Newcomer of the Week
Madison Mercado, Oklahoma State, MF, Fr., Sapulpa, Okla.
Mercado
started at midfielder for both of OSU's weekend wins as the
third-ranked Cowgirls improved to 4-0-0 and remained one of only two
undefeated teams in the Big 12. In Sunday's 4-1 win over Creighton,
Mercado scored two goals, becoming the first OSU freshman to record
multiple goals in a game since 2010. The first goal of her collegiate
career tied the game at 1-1, and her late goal sealed the win for the
Cowgirls.
