Smith, Bruce Named Big 12 Players of the Week

West Virginia got a warm welcome to the Big 12 Tuesday when the conference released its weekly award winners.

The Mountaineers' Geno Smith and Isaiah Bruce received the top spots on offense and defense after their standout performances in the team's win over Marshall on Saturday.

Smith, who broke the program's career touchdown passes record with Nos. 58 through 60, finished with 323 yards on 32 of 36 passing. The senior quarterback added 65 yards with his legs, including a 28-yard score.

Bruce, getting the start at linebacker in his first college game, led the Mountaineers with 16 tackles and seven solo stops in a stellar debut. The defensive highlight of the game came from Bruce as he scooped up a Rakeem Cato fumble and ran 43 yards the other way to put WVU ahead 55-17.

Bruce was also named the defensive player of the game by the West Virginia coaching staff, while Smith got the Walter Camp national offensive player of the week honor.

Marshall may not be Big 12 competition, but in a weekend when the conference went undefeated, these honors are a sign of the respect the new member is receiving in the league.
