Blue skies and fresh cut grass at Hawley Field welcomed the Mountaineers for week two of fall practices.
First week showed hopes of a very productive and successful season for new head coach, Randy Mazey. The staff got together and decided on seven players to keep from walk-on tryouts. Mazey and the whole team will be expecting these guys to step up day in and day out. Main roles will start small for the walk-ons with the chance of working their way up.
"They are all good baseball players and good Mountaineers. So we are not in a hurry to run them off quite yet."
Last Thursday's rain helped the team relax a little and provided some team chemistry with the players. At the end of practice, Mazey rewarded his players with sliding drills in the outfield grass.
"If you're going to play in inclement weather and be good at it than you need to practice it," he said.
At the end of this month WVU baseball will host their alumni weekend. October 20th the opening ceremonies will take place and on the 21st they will host the alumni game at Hawley Field.
"I hope anybody who has ever played baseball for the Mountaineers will come and join us. One of the first things I did when I got this job was make a commitment to get the formers players from here involved back into the program"
The Mountaineers are entering the Big 12 with a completely new staff. In the off season, Mazey signed 19 players with no previous playing experience. As for his staff, they will also have to learn as they go about the players that are already returning from last year's team.
