Geno Smith has been named a semifinalist for the Maxwell Award in his final season at West Virginia.
Smith is one of 16 on the list for the award, which is presented annually to the nation's top collegiate football player. Along with the senior Mountaineer quarterback, Kansas State's Collin Klein is also on the list, the only other player from the Big 12 Conference.
Through seven games, Smith has passed for 2,417 yards with 26 touchdowns and two interceptions.
Early in the season, Smith had become the clear favorite for the Maxwell Award and the Heisman Trophy, but after two-straight losses in which he struggled for WVU, those hopes have likely faded.
Smith is one of seven quarterbacks on the list of semifinalists, along with Klein, USC's Matt Barkley, Florida State's E.J. Manuel, Texas A&M's Johnny Manziel, Alabama's A.J. McCarron and Ohio State's Braxton Miller.
Smith and the Mountaineers will try to right the ship when they face fellow Big 12 newcomer TCU in a game Saturday in Morgantown.
