MORGANTOWN -

West Virginia is bound for the Bronx.

Just one season removed from the Big East Conference, the Mountaineers will face a former league foe when they take on Syracuse in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl.

WVU finished its first season in the Big 12 with a 7-5 record, going 4-5 again conference opponents.

The matchup will be played on Dec. 29th at 3:15 p.m. from Yankee Stadium.

"We finished the season strong with two straight wins, and I am glad our players get the reward of playing in a bowl game," West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen said in a statement. "This will be West Virginia's 11th straight bowl appearance and one more chance for our fans to see the 2012 Mountaineers. Playing in New York City will provide a national stage and Yankee Stadium will be a great venue for our seniors to finish their careers."

WVU has lost its last two games against Syracuse in the 2010 and 2011 seasons, a series that had been played every year since 1955. The Orange hold a 32-27 advantage in the history of the season.

Prior to losing in 2010, West Virginia had gotten eight-straight wins over Syracuse dating back to the 2002 season.

The teams play for the Ben Schwartzwalder Trophy, named after the former WVU football player and Syracuse football coach. The trophy was first introduced in the 1993 season, when WVU came away with a 43-0 victory.

"I am pleased that our football team will get the reward of playing in a bowl game. Changing conferences has been an adjustment, and I am proud of how our players have handled themselves and prepared," Director of Athletics Oliver Luck said. "I am also excited for our fans, who will get the chance to visit a great city in close proximity to the state of West Virginia. I am looking forward to seeing Yankee Stadium filled with Gold and Blue."

In WVU quarterback Geno Smith's two seasons starting in the Big East, Syracuse was the only team he did not beat.

The Big 12 is expected to officially announce each of its bowl game matchups later Sunday.
