Men's Basketball: WVU vs. Eastern Kentucky Preview

Posted:
MORGANTOWN -

After having Christmas week off, West Virginia will return to action on Sunday when Eastern Kentucky visits Morgantown.

The Mountaineers (6-5) are coming off consecutive wins against Oakland and Radford, while the Colonels (10-2) have lost two of their past three games.

It's been a tough start to the season for WVU, and the last two wins weren't all that convincing. Still, a win on Sunday would give the team a nice winning streak heading into conference play.

A big problem for the Mountaineers has been scoring. They're averaging just under 70 points per game and shooting 40.5 percent from the field. They've scored 70 or more points in four of their six wins, but just once in their five losses.

Aaric Murray now leads the team with eleven points and 7.4 rebounds per game. For a while, he and Deniz Kilicli formed a nice duo inside for West Virgnia, but Kilicli has scored five total points over the last three games. If he can get back on track, it would be a big help for the team, but he has certainly struggled in the beginning part of this season.

Juwan Staten runs the point and adds 10.5 points for the Mountaineers.

One area the team has found success is in rebounding, which should give them a big advantage against the Colonels. The Mountaineers are averaging about 39 rebounds per game, but Eastern Kentucky is 344th in the country with just 27 per game.

West Virginia has also been playing well at home, so far. All four games at the Coliseum have resulted in WVU wins, while both of Eastern Kentucky's losses have come on the road. Both of those losses came by double digits.

The Colonels do have a defense that has given up 70 or more points in less than half of their games this season. The slate of opponents hasn't been all that daunting, though, and the only other game against a power conference team resulted in a loss to Illinois. The Colonels' last game was a 73-70 win against High Point.

They are led in scoring by Glenn Cosey, who nets 16.1 per game. Mike DiNunno adds 14.4, and Corey Walden puts up 10.1. Tarius Johnson leads in rebounding with 4.6 per game.

These two teams have only met once before, and Eastern Kentucky came away with a two-point win in 1979.

Sunday's game will tip at 4 pm and will be televised by Root Sports.
