Longtime Assistant Steve Dunlap Out for WVU Football

Dana Holgorsen said following his team's 38-14 loss in the Pinstripe Bowl that he would conduct a full evaluation of the program in the offseason. The first major move in the process took place on Saturday with the firing of assistant head coach Steve Dunlap.

West Virginia football Sports Information Director Mike Montoro confirmed the firing Saturday.

Dunlap was in his second coaching stint with the Mountaineers, having served on former WVU coach Don Nehlen's staff from 1984 to 2000, including 10 seasons as defensive coordinator. He then coached at Syracuse, North Carolina State and Marshall before returning to Morgantown when Bill Stewart put together his staff for the 2008 season.

When last season's defensive coordinator, Jeff Casteel, left for Arizona, Dunlap was the only assistant to remain on Holgorsen's staff as the head coach entered his second season at West Virginia.

In 2012, Dunlap was the assistant head coach and special teams coordinator while also taking charge of the "Star" linebackers.

Dunlap is a Hurricane, W.Va. native who graduated from WVU in 1976 after a career as a linebacker. In three seasons for the Mountaineers, Dunlap racked up the ninth-most tackles in program history, including a record 190 tackles as a junior in the 1974 season.

Since the regular season ended for West Virginia, Holgorsen has now let go of two coaches (Dunlap and cornerbacks coach Daron Roberts) and rearranged the duties of now-defensive coordinator Keith Patterson and associate head coach Joe DeForest.

Holgorsen was not specific about the changes he anticipated making to the program following the 7-6 debut in the Big 12 Conference, but on Saturday, a 26-year WVU coaching veteran became the latest victim of one of the nation's worst defenses.
