Former West Virginia University baseball star Jedd Gyorko
wasted little time in knocking on the door of the Major Leagues. Gyorko is one
of 21 non-roster invitees to join the San Diego Padres in spring training.
Gyorko was a second round draft pick by the Padres in 2010.
He quickly worked his way up the ranks and put together some gaudy numbers last
season at Triple-A Tucson. Gyorko hit .328 with 24 Home Runs, 24 Doubles and 83
RBI in 92 games.
Gyorko is expected to make his Major League debut this
season and is believed to be competing for the starting job at second base in
spring training.
Gyorko is ranked as the second best prospect in the Padres
organization by mlb.com. He is currently not on the 40-man roster, which is why
he is classified as a non-roster invitee.
Pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report to the Padres
spring training facility in Peoria, Arizona on February 12. Position players
are scheduled to report on February 15 with the first full-team workout slated
for the following day.
