MORGANTOWN -
West Virginia University Head Coach Dana Holgorsen
reportedly has another vacancy among his assistant coaches. Numerous reports
out of Oklahoma indicate West Virginia University Offensive Line coach Bill
Bedenbaugh is heading to the University of Oklahoma to serve in the same capacity.
WVU officials have been unable to verify this.
Bedenbaugh served as WVU offensive Line coach for the past
two seasons. He was recently named a top recruiter by 247sports.com. Bedenbaugh
also just received a raise from $250,000 per year to $300,000 per year.
If these reports out of Oklahoma are true, Bedenbaugh would
be reunited on the same coaching staff as Oklahoma Defensive Coordinator Mike
Stoops. Stoops and Bedenbaugh served on the same staff when Stoops was the Head
Coach at the University of Arizona.
Bedenbaugh's departure would be the fourth by a WVU
assistant since the end of the regular season. Cornerbacks Coach Daron Roberts
was dismissed following the regular season finale against Kansas. Safeties
Coach Steve Dunlap was dismissed following the Pinstripe Bowl. Quarterbacks
Coach Jake Spavital left for the same position at Texas A&M.
This move is a bit of a surprise. Bedenbaugh sat with the
rest of the WVU coaching staff in the back of the room as Dana Holgorsen met
with the media last Wednesday to discuss National Signing Day. Holgorsen even
referenced Bedenbaugh's wishes for more offensive linemen in this class
numerous times. Bedenbaugh also spoke with reporters about his excitement for
the incoming class and expectations of his offensive line in 2013.
WVU lost three starters on the offensive line. If not
Bedenbaugh, his replacement will have that to deal with during spring drills
and throughout fall camp.
