Randy Mazey and his coaching staff begin their 2013 season in Jacksonville, Florida facing North Florida University in a three game series this weekend.
The question being asked by captains Brady Wilson this season is… "Why not us?" With a new coaching staff, new players, new stadium being built, and a new conference, the question remains, "Why not us this year?" Why shouldn't the Mountaineers hit the Big 12 out the park!?!
Coach Mazey released his three starters before leaving Morgantown this morning.
Corey Walter will lead off the season, while Harrison Musgrove and Dan Dierdorff will start Saturday and Sunday's games against NFU.
Walter was the most improved player this offseason for the Mountaineers giving pitching coach Derek Matlock and Mazey confidence in selecting him as their opening day starter. In 2012, Walter pitched three complete games, going into the eighth inning of his last six starts of the season.
Sophomore, Musgrave, will be returning from Tommy John surgery after going 4-2 with a 4.61 ERA on the mound in his freshman season.
As for Senior, Dierdorff, Mazey will look to him for a lot of innings this year.
"Dan is just steady and consistent," Mazey says. "Every day he goes out there you know you're going to have a chance to win because he throws strikes. He mixes pitches and will always keep you in the game."
If anything else, this season will hopefully bring the love and excitement for baseball back the West Virginia fan base.
