Spring training is underway and former West Virginia
University baseball star Jedd Gyorko is competing hard for a starting job with
the San Diego Padres.
Gyorko was a second round pick by the Padres in the 2010
major league baseball draft. He quickly rose through the minor league ranks to
put himself into position to possibly win a starting job with the major league
club.
Gyorko hit .311 with 30 home runs and 100 RBI in 126 games
between Double-A and Triple-A last season. He is off to a great start in the
competition with Logan Forsythe for the starting job at second base.
Gyorko belted a grand slam in his first spring training
at-bat. He followed that up with two more home runs in the first week of play.
All total, Gyorko has four hits in ten at-bats with three home runs and nine
RBI. Forsythe is hitless in six at-bats with no walks and a strikeout.
Gyorko is considered the top prospect in the Padres
organization. There are still four weeks of spring training games remaining
before the regular season begins. The Padres will open the season April 1 at
the New York Mets.
