Huggins Believes A Big 12 Tournament Run Is Possible For WVU

MORGANTOWN -

West Virginia earned the eight seed in the upcoming Big 12 tournament and will meet the nine seed Texas Tech Wednesday night. The Mountaineers swept the season series against the Red Raiders.

Consistency is one thing coaches want from their players in a given game. West Virginia Head Coach Bob Huggins has rarely seen that out of his team this season.

"We've played well at times," Huggins said on Monday. "We just haven't been as consistent as what we need to be. We've played pretty well in making a run against Iowa State, we played pretty well in spots against Oklahoma, we just got to be able to put it together. If we can put it together we are not that far away from beating some pretty good people."

A Big 12 tournament run will require some wins over "good people." Should WVU beat Texas Tech Wednesday night, it will meet top-seed Kansas on Thursday.

"We have spells where we just lose our edge and get down and we play pretty well in spots," Huggins said. "We have to put that together for an extended period of time. I think we are capable of playing with just about anybody on a given night. I still think we can make a run."

Nothing on paper indicates this team could make a run. But that is what makes college basketball in March so much fun to watch.

Despite its 13-18 record, Huggins says the players still believe they can do some big things, "I think their attitudes are still fine."

WVU enters the tournament riding a six-game losing streak and has lost seven of its last eight games. The only win in that stretch was a 66-64 victory over Texas Tech in Morgantown.

Typically this time of year the team is preparing for a trip to Madison Square Garden and the Big East Tournament in New York City. This year they will head West and meet their Big 12 brothers in Kansas City, Missouri. WVU and Texas Tech will tip it up at 7 o'clock Wednesday night.
