Holgorsen Backs Geno Smith After Report Bashes Him

MORGANTOWN -

West Virginia University Quarterback Geno Smith was back in the headlines this week. Pro Football Weekly writer Nolan Nowrocki ripped Smith in his critique of him heading into the NFL Draft.

Nowrocki said the following about Smith in his article, "Not a student of the game, Nonchalant field presence, does not command respect from teammates and cannot inspire. Mild practice demeanor – no urgency. Not committed or focused – marginal work ethic."

Nowrocki also referred to Smith as "an overhyped product of the system."

Who better to refute those claims than a man who worked very closely with Smith at WVU, Head Coach Dana Holgorsen.

"You guys know how I feel about Geno," Holgorsen said with a smile. "I am excited to go to New York. You don't get invited to New York for the NFL draft if you have issues. That is pretty safe to say. I am excited to be up there with him during that process, and he will be a great pro and will play for a long time."

Smith was constantly referred to as a "film rat" by numerous coaches on the staff. He also studied film of top NFL quarterbacks like Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady throughout the summer.

Geno Smith is expected to be the first quarterback taken in the draft, the big question is where?

Nowrocki called Smith a "top 50 draft pick." However, Smith is widely believed to be potentially a top 10 draft pick. His interviews with NFL teams and private workouts have reportedly been going well. He had an excellent pro day in front of scouts from 29 of the 32 teams.

Smith passed for 4,205 yards and 42 touchdowns while throwing just six interceptions last season. He finished his college career passing for 11,662 yards and 98 touchdowns against 21 interceptions.

NFL teams do their own homework. That homework will likely reflect the opposite of Nowrocki's assessment of Smith.
