WVU Nose Tackle Christian Brown Could Be 'Special'

MORGANTOWN -

The West Virginia University Defensive Line could definitely improve from its performance last season. The Mountaineers did not get nearly as much pressure on the quarterback as they would have liked.

What that season did was give that line some valuable experience from which to build a foundation. Defensive End Will Clarke and Nose Tackle Shaq Rowell are both back for their senior seasons.

Sophomore Christian Brown could be a factor this fall on that defensive line. He stands 6-foot-3 and weights 308 pounds.

"Christian has the ability to be a very talented and great football player," WVU Defensive Line Coach Erik Slaughter said. "he has done an outstanding job,"

"My mindset is to just keep getting better," Brown said. "With my technique, I'm working on my keys more."

Brown admittedly still has a lot to learn. That is what spring football is for. Head Coach Dana Holgorsen released a depth chart on Thursday that lists Brown behind Rowell at nose tackle.

"His idea of playing hard and mine conflict," Slaughter explained. "The thing he has got to do better is be consistent with his effort and doing that all the time."

"With Shaq (Rowell), we are always competing and fighting," Brown said. "If he makes a play, then I feel I need to make a play."

That competition should fuel both players and at the same time help develop depth. Brown will see the field this fall and get his chance to make some plays. In terms of a ceiling, this sophomore could become one of the better linemen to come through WVU.

"When he wants to play, there are not many people who can block him," Slaughter stated. "He could be very special. My job is to make sure he does those things on a consistent basis."

That word ‘special' is typically not thrown out there very often by coaches. It indicates just how highly Slaughter thinks of Brown. He is one to watch for now as spring practices wind down and the summer workouts begin.
