Former West Virginia University baseball star Jedd Gyorko is a serious candidate for Major League Baseball's National League Rookie of the Month award.
Gyorko is enjoying a very productive month of May with the San Diego Padres. He hit six home runs, knocked in 12 runs and hit six doubles so far this month.
The six homers are the most for any Padres rookie in the month of May. it equaled the most ever by a Padres rookie in a single month. Gyorko joins Nate Colbert (September 1969), Benito Santiago (August 1987) and Will Venable (August 2009) who all previously hit six homers in a month as Padres rookies.
When Gyorko hits a home run, it typically is something to enjoy. He has hit the three longest home runs on the team so far this season with his longest measured at 438 feet against the Saint Louis Cardinals.
Gyorko currently leads all Major League Baseball rookies with 50 hits, 12 doubles and 26 runs scored this season.
Major League Baseball is expected to announce the May National League Rookie of the Month sometime this weekend. The Atlanta Braves' Evan Gattis won the April Rookie of the Month honor.
Gyorko and the Padres are set to open a three-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays in San Diego Friday night.
